Around the virtual water cooler today, many major news sources discuss Google’s development of their own virtual machine to execute java syntax code in the Android platform, rather than licensing Sun’s JME directly from Sun. Dalvik executes bytecode converted from java bytecode. Having their own VM allows Google to optimize Java execution for their own platform, but raises many eyebrows in the open source community who wait to see how Google will give back to the community which has so far contributed much of the code which Android is based upon.
